KARACHI: Official of RTA shot dead

KARACHI, Jan 9: An official of the transport department was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Wednesday evening.

Syed Hasan Ali, 53, an office superintendent of the Regional Transport Authority, and a resident of A-One Cottages, Dastagir Colony, Federal-B Area, was returning home in his car (S-9245) from his office when he was sprayed with bullets by two men riding a motorcycle in Waqas Market, near Madina Masjid, Block 13-D, police said.

The victim was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The family took the body to Masjid-o-Imambargah Khairul Amal without conducting a post mortem.

The SSP East, Rehmat Khan Mehsood, said: “It was not an attempt of carjacking.” The assailants might have attempted to colour it a sectarian killing. The police would inquire the case taking all aspects into account, he added.

This was the fourth incident of terrorism in the city since the beginning of the new year during which three persons have lost their lives so far.

A bomb exploded outside “Area-51”, adjacent to Marina Club in Defence Housing Authority soon after midnight of the new year leaving eight persons wounded and more than a dozen vehicles damaged.

A prayer leader, Maulana Sanaullah Darkhasti, was shot dead in Surjani Town on Jan 3. An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was sprayed with bullets in front of his Azizabad house on Jan 7.

SUICIDE: An elderly man committed suicide by shooting himself inside his house in Joharabad on Wednesday.

Police said Jabbar Husain, 60, was suffering from a prolong illness. On Wednesday, while alone in his house in Block-16, the victim shot himself in the temple by his own pistol.

The deceased also left behind a suicide note justifying his action. The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for postmortem.

KILLED: Two persons were killed in two separate incidents of firing late Tuesday night.

Police said Arif alias Billa was killed allegedly by his brothers-in-law, who were not happy with his marriage with their sister.

Arif Mashi had converted to Islam a few months back and later his Christian girlfriend also converted. They had court married about four months back.

The Airport Police said Arif was sitting near Aqsa Clinic in Bhittaiabad when his two brothers-in-law, Javed and Pervaiz, came and opened fire at him and escaped. The body was shifted to the JPMC for postmortem.
