Kiwis beaten

BRISBANE, Jan 8: New Zealand’s bowling attack fell away badly as the touring side lost their limited overs warm-up match against Australia ‘A’ by 60 runs at the Gabba Tuesday.

Australia ‘A’, sent in to bat in hot and humid conditions, smashed 282 for five from their 50 overs and New Zealand replied with 222 all out from 45.3 overs.

Kiwi pace bowler Shane Bond bowled four overs for 21 runs before being taken to hospital suffering from dehydration, but later returned to bat, making three not out.

New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns took none for 54 from his 10 overs before contributing a hard-hitting 32, while Dion Nash was restricted to three overs for 20 because of a thigh injury.

But Bond and Nash are expected to be fit to play Friday when the triangular limited overs series, which also features South Africa, starts with Australia hosting New Zealand at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Craig McMillan (1-30) and spinner Daniel Vettori (1-57) were the only successful bowlers for New Zealand, while McMillan top scored for his side with a 67.

His departure in the 35th over at 166 for five — caught and bowled by leg-spinner Stuart MacGill (3-71) — left the tourists with the task of finding another 117 runs from their tail at more than seven runs per over.
