MARDAN, Jan 8: Two police officials were killed and another was injured in an encounter between police and an outlaw in the Peepal village, some 48km from here, on Tuesday.

On a tip-off that the outlaw, Umar Khaliq, who is wanted in 506 cases, was hiding in a house of the village, a police party of Ghundo Choki (Katlang), headed by ASI Mohammad Ali, raided the house.

Khaliq opened fire on the police, killing assistant sub-inspector Mohammad Ali and head constable Naeem Shah and wounding another head constable, Hidayatur Rehman. The injured was admitted to a local hospital.

The sister of the ASI died of heart attack when she learnt about the death of her brother.

The ASI, who belonged to the Mayar town, was buried in his ancestral graveyard, while the body of Naeem Shah was sent to his village, Chamtar.

The police later cordoned off the village, but the outlaw escaped.
