KARACHI, Jan 8: An anti-terrorism court sentenced on Tuesday a CIA inspector to one-month RI for conducting a defective probe in the murder case of a policeman.

Judge Abdul Hamid Abro of the ATC-2, who had acquitted the 16-year-old accused in the case for want of evidence last year, also sentenced Inspector Khair Muhammed Chandio to a 15-day term for delaying the submission of challan and for carrying out improper documentation.

The case pertained to the killing of constable Abdus Salam in May last year. The cop was found shot dead in the Federal B. Industrial Area police station and accused Murtaza was charged for the murder.

The investigation officer submitted the charge-sheet against the teenager in the ATC-2, which acquitted the accused on August 29, 2000 as no evidence could be brought on record against him. The investigation officer was simultaneously served with the show-cause notice under section 27 of the Anti-terrorism Act for conducting defective investigation in the case. The court also issued the notice to him under section 37 of the AT Act for committing contempt of court on account of delay in charge sheet and improper documentation.

Judge Abro sentenced the IO to one-month term and a fine of Rs20,000 under section 27 and ordered that the convict would have to undergo an additional two month term of simple imprisonment in case of default on the payment.

Under section 37, the judge awarded Inspector Chandio a 15-day RI and a fine of Rs10,000. He will undergo a term of one-month RI in case of default on the payment.

The police official was taken into custody immediately after the court convicted him.

Earlier, the accused, while recording his statement, deposed that he had sought verbal approval from the legal branch of the police for trying the accused.

Special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum made the final arguments in the proceedings, praying action against the investigation officer.

ROBBER SENTENCED: The additional district and sessions judge, West, Ms Qaiser Iqbal, sentenced a robber to suffer rigorous imprisonment for four year.

The judge convicted Ikhtiar Shah following his confession before the trial court.

The man, who had committed robbery in the house of Raza Ahmed on December 12, 1998 in Saeedabad, was also fined Rs1,000. The judge ordered that the convict would have to undergo an addition six-month term in case of default on the payment.

CAR SNATCHER: The additional district and sessions judge, East, sentenced a man to a five-year term on three counts, including bike snatching.

Accused Ijaz Ahmed was arrested red-handed during a shootout with police after he snatched the motorcycle from Arif last year in Ferozabad.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs5,000 on the convict, who would have to undergo an additional three-month term.

CORRUPTION REFERENCE: The accountability court, headed by Judge Dr. Qamaruddin Bohra, put off the hearing of a reference against Rauf B Qadri, a former chief of the Bankers’ Equity Limited (BEL) till Wednesday.

Defence counsel Shafi Muhammedi was still forwarding his final arguments when the court rose for the day.

The case against Mr Qadri pertained to the misappropriation of Rs15.225 million.
