ISLAMABAD, Jan 7: Owing to non-availability of a proper dumping site in Islamabad, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) finds it difficult to control environmental pollution in the city, a source in the Authority told Dawn.

The total daily production of garbage in Islamabad is stated to be 700 tons but due to

the non-availability of a proper dumping site, the Autjority could hardly be able to dispose of 500 tons of garbage daily.

“The remaining 200 tons of garbage remains in the residential localities causing pollution and viral diseases,” the source said.

“The Authority is looking for some foreign assistance to build a new dumping site at Kurri near Chak Shehzad.”

The source said the government of Japan had been agreed to finance the project earlier, but the payment was stopped due to economic sanctions imposed against the country after nuclear detonations.

The director, Sanitation, Muhammad Ali told Dawn that the feasibility of the project had already been prepared.

He added that the entire project could be completed within a year, if the required funds were provided.

“Though the Authority has improved the existing dumping site at sector H-12 but it is still not sufficient.”
