Three candidates Abdul Qayyum Awan, Haroon Bashir and Sardar Ghulam Sarwar Rana filed their nomination papers for the office of president while Shahid Fahim and Sardar Bashir Ahmad Khan for the vice-president.

Rana Hassan Ali Mahmood and Mian Ali Murtaza are vying for the office of secretary-general while Tahir Mahmood for the joint secretary.

The polling is scheduled to be held on Jan 12, 2002.

CONDEMNED: The Pak-Afghan Defence Council, Bahawalpur chapter, has condemned arrest of jihadi organizations’ chiefs and termed it double game of the USA.

At a meeting, council’s secretary Dr Syed Wasim Akhtar and other members of the JUI, SSP, Anjuman-i-Tajran and JUP denounced government’s stance on present crisis and termed crackdown on religious groups a ploy of USA against the country. They claimed the tactics were meant to weaken Pakistan against its fight for Kashmir.

The council demanded that Qazi Husain Ahmad, Maulana Fazal, Maulana Masood and Hafiz Muhammad Saeed should be released immediately.

SANCTIONED: The local tehsil council on Wednesday sanctioned a sum of Rs300,000 for reparation of fire-brigade lorries of the municipal corporation.
