DHAKA, Jan 1: A controversial piece of legislation enacted by the former Awami League government in Feb 2000, the Public Safety Act (PSA), will be repealed in the next parliamentary session, sources said on Monday.
The parliament is to meet in the third week of January.
The cabinet on Monday decided to repeal the ‘draconian’ law and asked the ministry of law and parliamentary affairs to finalize a draft bill and place it before the next cabinet meeting.
The meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
The draft bill will be placed before the parliament after cabinet’s approval.
The law had been criticized by the opposition, professional bodies and the civil society.
