11 killed in Kashmir violence

NEW DELHI, Dec 31: Kashmiri freedom fighters attacked an Indian army convoy in occupied Kashmir on Monday, killing one soldier, while security forces shot dead eight militants in a separate encounter in the south of the troubled state, police and army officials said.

Three militants, dressed in army fatigues, attacked the convoy near Drugmulla in the northern border district of Kupwara, an army spokesman said.

One soldier was killed and two were injured in the shootout which also left one militant dead. One civilian was also killed in the crossfire.

In a separate incident, an army patrol killed eight militants in a night-long encounter in Dora village, some 50 kilometres south of Srinagar. A police spokesman claimed eight militants were all members of the Jaish-i-Mohammad outfit.—AFP
