Haripur tehsil council rejects tax proposals

By Our Correspondent

HARIPUR, Dec 30: Tehsil council Haripur unanimously rejected on Thursday all the 23 new taxes proposed by the TMA.

However, the convener referred the proposal to the house standing committee on finance for consideration.

The council session was held here in the TMA Hall which was presided over by Amin Khan Badhora advocate. Speaking on this occasion, opposition leader Abdul Saboor Qureshi termed the new taxes uncalled for and an extra burden on the people. “When we didn’t provide them any facility then we have no right to burden them with taxes,” he pleaded.

Similar views were expressed by a number of other tehsil council members who strongly opposed the proposal to levy new taxes.

Later, the convener referred the matter to the house finance committee to submit a complete report in the next session.

Speaking on the occasion, the tehsil Nazim, Iftikhar Ashraf Khan, lambasted the role of the TMO and accused him of creating hurdles in the smooth functioning of the new system.

He said that they (tehsil council) was a representative forum of 0.7 million citizens of Haripur but the TMO was bent upon sabotaging the district government system by creating unnecessary hurdles in the affairs of tehsil administration on one or the other pretext, which would not be tolerated.

When the TMO Haripur, who was also present in the session, sought the permission to clear his position he was not allowed by the convener of the house.

Meanwhile, the TMO while talking to a group of Naib Nazims and tehsil councillors held the tehsil Nazim responsible for compelling him to accord sanction to some works which were in violation of rules.
