Probe into extortion

By Our Correspondent

GUJRAT, Dec 30: The district police, under the directives of the SSP, has started collecting details about those outlaws who are extorting money (Jagga) from transporters, it is learnt.

Sources said some bigwig have deputed their musclemen at various spots inside and outside the municipal bus stand who were collecting Rs100 per commuter bus and Rs35 per Hiace wagon.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said during the last three months, Civil Lines police registered six cases on the charges of extorting money from transporters. A case was registered against Afzal and Riasat Ali in September, separate cases against Sajid Husain, Zafar Iqbal, Naeem Shah and Arshad Husain in October and against Khalid Rauf in December.

He said the SSP has asked the Lorry Adda police post incharge to launch action against the mafia within 24 hours.

In an official letter, in the meanwhile, written to the district Nazim, the SSP has highlighted poor security arrangements at the municipal wagon and bus stand.

Sources said the SSP has urged the Nazim to order deployment of security guards to avert any untoward incident.
