One killed, 12 hurt in LoC firing

MUZAFFARABAD, Dec 23: One civilian was killed and at least 12 others were injured, some of them critically, as Indian troops troops continued to shell Azad Kashmir villages from across the Line of Control on Sunday,

Deputy Inspector-General of AJK Police, Sardar Faheem Ahmed Khan told Dawn that the Indians were indiscriminately targeting the people living along the LoC.

Mohammad Safeer, 28, son of Mohammad Bashir, was killed in Taroti, a village in district Poonch, as a mortar shell hit him, the deputy commissioner of Poonch, Chaudhry Liaqat Hussain, told Dawnby telephone.

He said the enemy firing, with light and heavy arms, started in the district at about 9am and continued till 1 pm. It resumed at 5pm and was still continuing.

The DC said that four people were injured in Taroti village and one was hurt in Polas village. They were identified as Sukaida Begum, Jawad Saghir, Mohammad Farooq, Karam Nainan and Mohammad Tauqeer.

In the neighbouring Hajira sector, a five-year-old boy, Mohammad Qasim, and his 11-year-old sister, Abida (children of Mohammad Saeed), and Shafaatullah, 45, son of Fazal Hussain, were injured in Tetrinot village, the DC said, adding that the wounded had been taken to different hospitals, where condition of some of them was stated to be critical.

DIG Faheem Khan said three people were injured in Digwar village in the Forward Kahuta sector of district Bagh. They were identified as Basera Bibi, wife of Abdul Qayyum; Mohammad Bashir, son of Kala Khan; and Yasir Hafeez, 14, son of Mohammad Hafeez.

In the Samahni sector in district Bhimbher, he added, Deewan Bibi, wife of Kala Khan, was injured in Danna village and admitted to the military hospital in Bhimbher.

The Samahni sector is being heavily shelled by Indian troops for the last two days. At least six people have been critically injured in several villages.
