OTTAWA, Dec 21: Los Angeles defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky scored his second goal of the season with 5:15 left as the Kings edged the Ottawa Senators 4-2 in a bruising game featuring six ejections and 252 penalty minutes Thursday.
Visnovsky took a pass in the left circle from Adam Deadmarsh and, with teammate Bryan Smolinski and Senators defenseman Curtis Leschyshyn screening goaltender Patrick Lalime, hit a shot that went off Lalime’s glove and into the net.
The teams combined for 195 minutes in penalties in the second period and caused a lengthy delay with 5:22 remaining when goaltender Felix Potvin tried to trip Andre Roy in the crease.
Roy retaliated by throwing a punch at the goalie that led to players from both sides getting involved, including Adam Mair of the Kings who came off the bench.
Roy, Potvin and Ottawa goalie Jani Hurme were assessed game misconduct penalties. Hurme’s came after he left the crease to challenge Potvin in front of the Ottawa bench.
There were six game misconducts including one for Mair who was given a double game misconduct penalty for being the first player off the bench.
Potvin, who stopped 12 shots, was replaced by Jamie Storr who made 14 saves. The trouble started 6:48 into the second when Ottawa defenseman Shane Hnidy and Jason Allison of the Kings squared off.
In Boston, Byron Dafoe made 23 saves and Andy Hilbert scored in his first NHL game as the Bruins snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-0 triumph over the Montreal Canadiens.
Dafoe stopped nine shots in the first period and seven apiece in each of the final two periods. He has three shutouts this season and 25 in his career.
Hilbert, who was recalled from Providence of the American Hockey League prior to the game, scored 5:47 into the contest. Rob Zamuner added his second and third goals of the season and Brian Rolston had a powerplay goal and an assist for the Bruins.
In Philadelphia, Brian Boucher made 29 saves, including a pair of important stops midway through the third period, and Keith Primeau scored one goal and set up another as the Flyers edged the Dallas Stars 2-1.
Primeau snapped a 1-1 contest with 8:24 left in the second period, gathering in a rebound and wrapping a backhander around fallen Stars goaltender Ed Belfour. It was his sixth goal of the season but third in seven games.
Martin Rucinsky’s powerplay goal just over four minutes into the second period accounted for Dallas’s lone goal.
In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Mike Comrie scored with 96 seconds left in regulation to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-3 tie with the Devils.
Comrie stole the puck in the slot on an attempted clearing pass by New Jersey’s Sergei Brylin and skated around Devils defenseman Scott Stevens who dived to attempt to block the shot.
But Comrie was able to control the puck, move to his left and beat goaltender Martin Brodeur for his third goal in the last three games.
In Nashville, Tennessee, six different players scored as the Predators extended their franchise record home unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 6-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.
Cliff Ronning and Kimo Timonen each had a powerplay goal and three assists for Nashville which improved to 8-0-2 in its last 10 games at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
