Bangladesh suffer innings defeat

AUCKLAND, Dec 15: New Zealand’s Chris Drum produced a career-best six for 49 as Auckland crushed Bangladesh by an innings and 193 runs in a tour match Saturday.

Having managed to hold out against the Auckland attack on Friday evening, ending the day on 165 for nine, the tourists survived a further seven overs Saturday morning and put on 17 runs for the final wicket.

The match came to a close when Drum, 12th man for New Zealand in the first Test in Hamilton starting Tuesday, forced tailender Manjural Islam to play on to a shortish delivery.

It gave Drum his first 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket.

Bangladesh had a mountain to climb after being dismissed for 120 in their first innings and Auckland showed scant regard for their weakened attack, missing strike bowler Mortuza out with a groin strain.

The home side hit 495 and on a wearing pitch which often kept low, Bangladesh’s chances of batting two sessions on Friday and all day Saturday were minimal.

But the tourists did show some spirit in their attempts to survive. Aminul Islam, one of the few Bangladesh players with a Test-century to his name, remained unbeaten on 79 while opener Al-Saharier hit a bright 34.

The tailenders also chipped in with support, the last three wickets going for 78 runs.
