Sri Lanka enter final

COLOMBO, Dec 12: Sri Lanka all but secured a place in the final of a triangular one-day international tournament with a 59-run win over Zimbabwe under lights at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday.

Spinner Muttiah Muralitharan finished with four wickets for 32 as Zimbabwe, chasing a target of 272, were bowled out for 213 in 47.2 overs.

Earlier Avishka Gunawardene and man-of-the-match Mahela Jayawardene shared a third-wicket partnership of 166 to enable Sri Lanka to post their impressive total of 272 for seven in their 50 overs.

Sri Lanka, with two wins and one defeat, lead the way with nine points in the series. West Indies are second on four points with Zimbabwe third, also on four points but with only one game to play.

Zimbabwe, who were bowled out for 38 — the lowest total in one-day international history — in losing to Sri Lanka on Saturday, got off to a good start with openers Dion Ebrahim and Grant Flower putting on 69 for the first wicket.

Grant Flower eventually top-scored with 45, but the rest of the Zimbabwe batsmen found runs hard to come by.

Despite their fine stand in Sri Lanka’s innings, Gunawardene and Jayawardene missed out on hundreds.

Gunawardene scored 90 off 131 balls with eight fours before pulling a ball from Heath Streak to Stuart Carlisle at wide mid-on.

Jayawardene fell lbw to Henry Olonga on 96. He faced 108 balls and hit 10 fours.

Zimbabwe paid dearly for letting of both batsmen early in their innings.

Gunawardene was dropped by Craig Wishart at first slip off Travis Friend at nine.

Jayawardene had two reprieves at 22 when wicket-keeper Andy Flower failed to hold on to a snick off Douglas Marillier and at 92 when Dion Ebrahim dropped a sitter at backward point off Olonga.

They came together after skipper Sanath Jayasuriya, who won the toss and decided to bat first, was out caught behind to the second ball without scoring.

The final flourish to the innings was provided by Russel Arnold who scored a quickfire 34 off 27 balls to see the total past the 250-run mark.

Streak was the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers, taking three for 51.

Sri Lanka play West Indies in the next game in Kandy on Saturday.
