Agony and ecstasy for Glasgow giants

PARIS, Dec 7: The UEFA Cup brought agony and ecstasy for Glasgow on Thursday as Celtic crashed out on penalties to Valencia while Rangers advanced to the last 16 after a spotkick shoot-out of their own at Paris Saint Germain.

Spanish giants Valencia beat Celtic 5-4 in their penalty duel at Parkhead to book their place in the fourth round with keeper Santiago Canizares making vital penalty saves as the beaten Champions League finalists of the last two seasons kept their European interest alive.

Rob Douglas saved twice for Celtic in the shoot-out it wasn’t enough as once again the Scottish Premier League champions saw a European campaign end before Christmas.

Substitute Ferrer Mista scored the winning spotkick for the Spaniards after Canizares had saved from Joos Valgaeren.

Celtic, 1-0 down after the first leg in Spain, levelled the tie on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Sweden striker Henrik Larsson - but couldn’t improve on that.

Rangers qualified with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out win in Paris.

Both legs against PSG ended goalless after Dutch international Ronald de Boer blasted a penalty over the bar for the visitors in extra time.

But when it came down to more spotkicks Rangers just edged through as PSG defender Mauricio Pochettino missed the final effort for the hosts.

PSG coach Luis Fernandez was sanguine in defeat.

“I’m disappointed but we came into the event through the back door (via the Intertoto Cup) so we just have to move on,” said Fernandez, who left Nicolas Anelka on the bench until late on even though the striker was over his foot injury.

As Glasgow mulled an evening which brought only satisfaction to one side of the city Milan was celebrating the safe passage of both its teams.

Inter Milan thrashed England’s Ipswich Town 4-1 to clinch a 4-2 aggregate win in their third round return aided by a Christian Vieri hat-trick, who created the other one for Mohamed Kallon.

A late Alun Armstrong penalty was scant consolation for Ipswich.

AC Milan completed a 3-1 aggregate win over Sporting Lisbon with a 1-1 draw in Lisbon.

Elsewhere, Brazilian striker Sonny Anderson was the toast of Lyon as he emulated Vieri in scoring a brilliant hattrick to take the French side past Bruges on away goals.

Lyon had been abysmal in losing the first leg in Belgium 4-1 but former Barcelona and Monaco star Anderson scored twice in four first-half minutes to set the French club on their way.

Anderson said he was anxious to prove that the club’s poor away showing in the first leg had been uncharacteristic.

“It’s a great achievement for the club to get through this round.

“We asked ourselves if we were capable of doing it but we believed in ourselves throughout,” he said.

Lille joined their compatriots in the next round to make up for PSG’s dismissal after battering Fiorentina of Italy 2-0 for a 3-0 aggregate win with Bruno Cheyrou and Australian striker Mile Sterjovski the scorers.

Cheyrou headed in after 33 minutes and Sterjovski, just on for Salehaddine Bassir, then added a solo second to polish off the Italians.

Parma rolled through as they whipped Brondby 3-0 in Copenhagen with goals from Patrick Mboma, Japanese playmaker Hidetoshi Nakata and Marco Di Vaio.

PSV Eindhoven thanked a pair of goals from Vennegoor of Hesselink on the way to a 4-1 win over Greek side PAOK Salonika to complete a 6-4 aggregate victory.

Servette Geneva of Switzerland caused a surprise with a 3-0 win at Germany’s Hertha Berlin following a goalless first leg.
