PTCL plea for line rent increase opposed

By Our Staff Correspondent

FAISALABAD, Dec 6: The Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI), condemning the proposed enhancement in the line rent and reduction in local call duration, urged the government not to accept the proposal.

In a statement here on Thursday, the FCCI president said the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) had failed to resolve consumers’ problems despite charging heavy bills. Over-billing and line faults were the most common complaints of consumers, he added.

He claimed that consumers would stop using phones in case line rent was enhanced which would cause huge financial loss to the PTCL as well as the national economy.

He requested President Gen Pervez Musharraf to direct the PTCL high-ups not to enhance line rent in the larger interest of consumers.

EDUCATION POLICY: The Primary Teachers Association of Punjab has demanded that a new education policy should be evolved in consultation with the professionals and genuine representatives of teachers.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, association information secretary Bashir Snobar alleged that billions of rupees received from international donor agencies for the promotion of education neither judiciously distributed nor spent on enhancing literacy rate.

He maintained that a number of policies were imposed on the teachers without realizing their negative impact on society. All such policies have failed to enhance literacy rate during the last one decade. However, the education department high-ups were befooling their bosses by giving them wrong statistics, he added.

He appreciated the government move for abolishing the posts of director public instruction (DPI) of schools and colleges.

The government should also take notice of corruption in the educational institutions to save this sector from collapse.
