KARACHI: Afghans held with rocket

KARACHI, Dec 5: The Karachi police on Wednesday recovered a Russian-made rocket from three Afghan nationals in the Gulistan-i-Johar area.

The Afghan nationals were identified as Khalid s/o Abdul Haq; Malik s/o Gul Badin, and Niaz Mohammed s/o Khayal Mohammed.

They were arrested by the Gulistan-i-Johar police on information by an unknown person. The Police were informed about a dangerous object in possession of some persons behind the Karachi International Airport.

An officer of the bomb disposal squad said it could be fired at least 12 to 15 kilometres through its launcher and 6 to 8 kilometres from battery and timer.

When the police seized the rocket, all its devices were separated. These could be fixed in a few minutes.

Syed Kamal Shah, inspector general police Sindh, confirmed that a similar rocket was fired at a college in the Civil Lines area a few days back.

He said all the functions of the seized rocket were in working condition. The IGP said similar rockets had earlier been recovered in Balochistan. The police registered a case against the three accused and are making further investigations.— PPI
