UN survey team due in Islamabad

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: A 17-member team of the United Nations officials is expected in Islamabad later in the week to asses support requirements for an enhanced UN presence in the region.

UN information centre director Eric Falt told a press conference on Tuesday that the survey was being undertaken within the context of Security Council Resolution 1378, which affirms that the UN should play a central role in supporting the efforts by the Afghan people to establish urgently a transitional administration leading to the formation of a new government.

He said the team would make a technical assessment of the logistical support that might be required for establishing the structures of governance in Afghanistan.
