Course record by Bjornstad

HONG KONG, Dec 1: Henrik Bjornstad of Norway stormed into the lead at the 700,000 dollars Hong Kong Open after carding a course record 10-under-par 61 in the third round on Saturday.

Bjornstad came from nowhere to grab a one-shot advantage over Australian Adam Scott after a flawless round that included an eagle and eight birdies on the par-71 course at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

He had opening rounds of 66 and 69 before his 61 took him to an aggregate 17-under-par 196.

Scott is very much in contention going into the final round on Sunday after returning a five-under-par 65. He had the chance to tie for the lead, but missed a five-foot putt for par on the final hole to end the third round the way he started with a bogey.

Double U.S. Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal also made his move with his best round of the tournament, a seven-under-par 64.

Olazabal, who struggled in the second round, regained his appetite for birdies by collecting five. He also added an eagle three to finish two shots off the pace.

England’s Mark Foster was also tied with Olazabal, two strokes behind Bjornstad, after carding a four-under 67.

A further stroke behind were Swedes Carl Pettersson and Anders Forsbrand, and Welshman Mark Pilkington who were all 14-under.

HARRINGTON SHOOTS 61 BUT ELS BACK ON TOP

SUN CITY (South Africa): Ernie Els played his way through the controversy of being sued by his ex-caddie and shot a 66 to surge into a three-stroke lead at the end of the third round of the Sun City Golf Challenge on Saturday.

But the round of the day belonged to Ireland’s Padraig Harrington whose 61 took him into third place, four behind Els but just one off second-placed Bernhard Langer.

Els was served court papers on Friday by his former caddie Simon Masilo for what he alleges are outstanding payments.

But the winner of the previous two Sun City Golf Challenges seemed oblivious to the issue at the Gary Player Country Club on Saturday.

A six-under par round lifted Els to 17-under par 199 and three clear of German Bernhard Langer.
