300,000 Mozambicans face starvation

MAPUTO, Nov 24: About 300,000 people were eating wild fruits and roots to survive as some districts in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane face starvation.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Joao Carrilho said the 300,000 people live in the districts of Panda, Mabote and Funhalouro, in the north of Inhambane province.

“There are pockets of hunger in those districts, which is usually chronic in terms of shortage of food,” Carrilho told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. “But we should not think we will solve this situation only by producing food.”.—dpa
