Humanitarian response to offer of surrender urged
ISLAMABAD, Nov 20: President Pervez Musharraf has urged a humanitarian response to offers of surrender by Afghan forces in Kunduz province of Afghanistan.
He discussed the plight of the garrison in Kunduz with Prime Minister Tony Blair and Secretary of State Colin Powell on Nov 19.
The UN Security Council Resolution 1378 of Nov 14, 2001, “calls on all Afghan forces to refrain from acts of reprisal, to adhere strictly to their obligations under human rights and international humanitarian law...”.
The Government of Pakistan is requesting the United Nations to take cognizance of the threat of grave violations of international law by forces of Afghan factions, and make efforts to prevent massacre such as those that took place in Mazar-i- Sharif and Herat during the current month.
PAKISTAN’S STAND LAUDED: Poland has appreciated the courageous decision taken by Pakistan leadership to join international fight against terrorism and desired to enhance bilateral relations.
The President of Poland, Alexander Kwasniewski, telephoned President Gen Musharraf on Monday and appreciated Pakistan’s decision to join international coalition against terrorism.
President Kwasniewski briefed President Musharraf on the Conference of 16 heads of State and Government of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, which was convened in Warsaw on Nov 6, following the terrorist attacks of the Sept 11 in the United States.
The President of Poland also expressed his keen desire to further enhance bilateral relations and cooperation between Poland and Pakistan.
President Musharraf reciprocated the sentiments of friendship expressed by the Polish President as our desire to intensify bilateral relations.—APP
