Lakers rally in fourth quarter
LOS ANGELES, Nov 19: Shaquille O’Neal had 28 points and 15 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers rallied for a 93-85 victory over the Sacramento Kings Sunday night.
The two-time defending NBA champions (8-1) played sloppily for three quarters but mounted a comeback in the fourth to improve to 6-0 at the Staples Center.
Rookie Stanislav Medvendenko’s follow shot with 5:44 left capped a 12-3 run and gave Los Angeles a 76-75 lead.
The Lakers never trailed thereafter and made 10-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes.
They nailed it shut with 1:05 left when Rick Fox, who scored 12 of his season-high 16 points in the second half, got one of his seven assists on a thunderous dunk by Kobe Bryant, who had 29 points and eight assists.
Peja Stojakovic scored 25 points and Vlade Divac had 15, 15 rebounds and eight assists for Sacramento, whose three-game winning streak ended.
Mike Bibby scored 12 points and Doug Christie added 11, but the duo made only a combined 6-of-21 shots.
Also in Los Angeles, Elton Brand had 20 points and eight rebounds and Quentin Richardson scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Clippers posted a 99-86 victory over New York, which remained winless on the road.
The Knicks have lost their first six road games of the season, matching their worst start since 1985.
Latrell Sprewell scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half for New York and Allan Houston had 19 — but just two in the fourth quarter.
Kurt Thomas added 11 points and 11 rebounds and Clarence Weatherspoon chipped in 10 and 10 for the Knicks.
The Los Angeles bench outscored New York’s reserves 37-15.
