Flyers outgun Capitals

PHILADELPHIA, Nov 16: The Flyers erupted for three goals on their first seven shots and Brian Boucher and Roman Cechmanek combined on a shutout as Philadelphia beat the reeling Washington Capitals 5-0 on Thursday.

Keith Primeau had a goal and two assists for Philadelphia, which led 3-0 before the game was four minutes old.

The Capitals, who were coming off a humiliating 11-5 rout by Ottawa, picked up right where they left off as former Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Olaf Kolzig was victimised for three goals in the first three minutes and 40 seconds.

Usually one of the top defensive teams in the league, Washington has suffered inexplicable defensive lapses all season and Thursday was no exception.

Primeau opened the scoring 44 seconds into the game and Jiri Dopita added his first NHL goal on a power play 94 seconds later.

It was only another 82 seconds before Mark Recchi scored a short-handed goal for Philadelphia to make it 3-0.

Dopita added an assist on John LeClair’s ninth goal of the season on a powerplay in the second period and Recchi set up Simon Gagne’s eighth goal with two minutes left in the third.

Boucher stopped 13 shots and was working on his third shutout of the season but left with a strained left hamstring late in the second period.

Thursday’s results (home team in CAPS):

BOSTON 5 New Jersey 4 (OT)

Carolina 1 OTTAWA 1 (OT)

PHILADELPHIA 5 Washington 0

Toronto 3 TAMPA BAY 2

PHOENIX 5 San Jose 3

Chicago 2 CALGARY 2 (OT)

VANCOUVER 2 St Louis 1

Dallas 4 LOS ANGELES 3

HOUSTON (Texas): Shaquille O’Neal scored seven of his 30 points in overtime and sealed the win with his 13th rebound as the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers edged the Houston Rockets 98-97 on Thursday to remain unbeaten.

The Lakers let a 15-point third-quarter lead slip away but never trailed in overtime as Los Angeles extended its season-opening winning streak to seven games.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers, the league’s lone undefeated team, with 31 points.

The Rockets trailed 60-45 in the third quarter but battled back and tied the game at 87-87 to send the game into overtime as the Lakers looked in danger of suffering their first loss.

But O’Neal scored the first five points of overtime and the Lakers withstood another Houston comeback to improve to 7-0.

Thursday’s results (home team in CAPS):

DETROIT 115 Dallas 89

NEW YORK 83 Miami 74

Portland 101 MEMPHIS 85

Orlando 101 DENVER 82

LA Lakers 98 HOUSTON 97 (OT)
