Tariq Aces reign supreme

ISLAMABAD, Nov 12: Tariq Aces reigned supreme as they crushed Pre Emptors in the final stanza 68-29 to win the Alcatel Pakistan Open Bridge Championship Sunday with a tally of 181 Victory Points.

The triangular tussle for the title ended after Air Power and Skippers, who were within striking distance of Tariq Aces throughout the tournament failed to get big scores in the last two segments.

Led by Tariq Aziz, Tariq Aces included Javed Khalid, Shauq Hussain, Saeed Akhtar, Javed Chaudhry and Sarwar Khan.

The final day’s play began with Tariq Aces ahead in the leader board with 103 points followed by Skippers and Air Power with 97 and 91 respectively.

Tariq Aces made up for a disappointing 15-15 sharing against Falcons in the sixth round with an impressive 22-8 win over Bokharis in the 8th round.

The match-up between Tariq Aces and Air Power was the duel of the championship. Air Power’s hopes were dashed as Aces notched up an 18-12 victory.

In the final round Tariq Aces, with their calibre of play undiminished, walloped Pre Emptors 23-7 to take the championship. Air Power and Skippers played the decider for second and third positions.

Air Power comprising Ihsan Qadir, Abdul Waheed, Col (Retd) Masud Pervez, Noman Butt and Zia Haider, set aside Skippers 21-9 to capture the runner-up spot with 170 points.

The Skippers team of Asif Ali, Air Cdr (Retd) Kiyani, Hafiz Mirza, Mohiuddin Jamili and Elizabeth Naqvi finished third with 158 points.

In fourth position were Falcons- Capt Mushtaq Kiyani, Dr. Saeed Ahmad, Nazar Hussain Khan and Ahmad Sharif. They had 140 points.
