Vaqas lifts trophy by a stroke

ISLAMABAD, Nov 11: Vaqas Ahmad Sunday won the Nokia Federal Amateur Golf Championship at the Islamabad Club by just one stroke.

Vaqas, who led by six strokes going into the last day of the championship, was given a scare by Tariq Mahmood, who fought back on the last five holes and struck three birdies. A fourth would have forced a playoff but he was not so lucky, missing a chip on the last hole.

Vaqas carded five over 77 to lift the gross trophy with a score of 216. Tariq with par 72, was the highest gross scorer and had an aggregate of 217 and finished second in the competition. Ghazanfar Mahmood with one over 73 took third place, his aggregate score being 220.

Col Ibrar, a 12-stroke handicapper, captured the net event carding 68 and had a score of 214 over three days. Gulraiz Shahid carded 70 for an aggregate score of 218 and claimed the second spot.

Tahira Nazir took the honours in the ladies gross event with an aggregate score of 167. In second place was Jamila Jabbar with 176 while Yasmin Mobarik was third having a score of 178.

Mehvish Chishtie was the winner in the net category carding 176 over two days of competition leaving Uzma Nazir (152) in second spot. Finishing a close third with 153 was Bushra Rafi Khan.

Lt-Col Safi emerged the champion in the seniors gross event. He had a score of 156 followed by Brig Ghafoor Raja (169) and Hashim Khan, who was third.

AW Afridi annexed the seniors net event with a score of 141, leaving Safdar Awan (143) and Asad Qureshi (144) behind.

The subsidiary gross event was won by Aftab Khan while Mian Shahid clinched the net competition.
