Top seed Shahzad books spot in semis

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 7: Talented Aasim Javed, who caused an upset with a victory over 5th seeded Adnan Khan in the first round, fought bravely Wednesday to snatch a set from top seeded Shahzad Khan, before the latter moved into the junior (Under-18) singles semifinals of the fifth UBL Salma Noorani Tennis Tournament here at the Karachi Club hardcourt.

The fast improving Shahzad from Faisalabad, the winner of the two ITF Junior Championships and the National Grasscourt junior title, played an erratic first set before beating unseeded Aasim Javed 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Aasim, a student of the Karachi Grammar School, played outstandingly in the first set as he hit a brace of forehand and backhand winners. Shahzad Khan came under pressure and committed unforced mistakes and Aasim won 6-3.

However, Shahzad took control of the proceedings in the second set slamming brilliant crosscourt shots and hit powerful drives down the line to take the second set at 6-0 as Aasim invariably faltered with his strokes. In the third and deciding set Shahzad also showed his total domination with a series of powerful forehand winners to outwit Aasim again for a 6-0 triumph

Shahzad meets fourth seed Akbar Pataudi, who recorded an impressive 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mahir Nisar.

Second seed Inam Gul outplayed Tanveer Ashiq 6-2, 6-1 to qualify for the last four, where he meets seventh seed Muteeb Pasha, who was provided a tough time by Vinod Das before he was home and dry 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

In the men’s singles, Aurangzeb easily defeated Ather Iltifat 6-0, 6-1.

On Tuesday night third seed Nomi Qamar secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jalil Khan to enter the men’s singles quarterfinals and Hasan Mahmood also reached the last eight with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Mohammad Manzoor.

Of the seven boys (Under-14) singles pre-quarterfinals, Jahangir A. Rashid dropped the second set before recording a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 triumph over Irfan Yousuf, while promising Amir Ali Khan put up a spirited fight against Abdus Samad, who won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
