Published November 8, 2001

KARACHI, Nov 7: Various Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town development schemes being executed under the Khushal Pakistan Programme were visited, on Wednesday, by Brig Ayaz Pir and Brig Haider Abbas of the Army Coordination Team, accompanied by the District Coordination Officer, Shafiqur Rehman Paracha.

During their visit to Shanti Nagar Union Council No 7, they were told that a 9,500-foot long road would be constructed with an estimated cost of Rs2.9 million, facilitating about 70,000 people of the area.

The DCO directed the Town Municipal Officer, Gulshan Town, for removal of garbage heaps from the area, besides taking steps for sanitation and suggested development of a park at the ground presently covered with garbage.

The TMO was asked to take initiative in this respect with the help of Town and Union Nazims, councillors and the local people.

They also inspected the water supply system of the area, including a pump through which the Public Health Engineering Department supplies water.

The people complained that they were not getting sufficient water to meet their daily needs. The inspection team directed the chief engineer of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, Khalid Malik, to bring improvement in the water supply system and to immediately set up a site camp in the area to ensure the proper supply of water.

The team also visited Sehba Akhtar Road in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. The 3,000 ft-long road is undergoing repair work and the contractor was directed to complete the project in specified time while maintaining the standard.

Earlier, the team reviewed problems pertaining to sanitation and sewerage at a meeting in Gulshan Town office. The KWSB officials were asked to hold a meeting with Town Nazim and TMO in order to examine the issues and take steps for redressal.

The team took notice of the extremely untidy conditions at University Road and Hasan Square and directed for taking steps with the assistance of shopkeepers and residents.—PPI
