PPP seeks workers’ opinion on party policy

FAISALABAD, Oct 30: The establishment of a broad-based government in Afghanistan can be the only source to bring peace to the region.

This was stated by PPP acting Secretary-general Raza Rabbani in a resolution adopted by the workers’ convention of the party held here at the residence of ex-MPA Raja Riaz Ahmad on Tuesday.

He said efforts must be made to stop US strikes against Afghanistan and find a negotiated settlement to the crisis.

The PPP leader claimed the restoration of democracy in the country could only be possible if transparent elections were conducted under the supervision of an independent election commission.

The convention urged president Gen Pervez Musharraf to announce the schedule of general elections and transfer power to the elected representatives of the masses.

Mr Raza Rabbani said suggestions from workers had been sought for the first time in the history of the country. He claimed party policies would be formulated after consultation at the grass-root level.

Reiterating the significance of national consensus, he said, the government should hold talks with the heads all the main political parties.

PPP secretary-general Khalid Ahmad Khan Kharal said the gathering had been arranged on the direction of party chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

The PPP would implement its manifesto in true letter and spirit after coming into power and efforts would be made to resolve the peoples’ problems at their doorsteps, he claimed.

Punjab PPP president Qasim Zia said proposals from workers would be sent to the chairperson.

He also advocated the need to set up an interim political government so the military could give maximum attention for safeguarding the geographical frontiers of the motherland.

He apprehended that the present Afghan crisis would severely hit the peace in the country if not properly dealt with.

He also urged the government to withdraw all references and cases registered against Benazir and Asif Ali Zardari.
