ISLAMABAD: Colour blindness: SC upholds NED decision

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: The Supreme Court on Monday accepted the decision of the NED university of not admitting a colour blind student in electrical, mechanical or computer engineering departments, saying it would be difficult for him to distinguish between colour diagrams, colour wires and circuits.
Disposing of a writ petition by Muhammad Osama, the court advised him to take admission in some other discipline as it would not be possible for him to study electrical, mechanical or computer science.
The petitioner had qualified for admission in NED in 2000- 2001 by passing an entrance test. After medical examination, he was found colour blind and declared unfit to study in the engineering university under its rules.
When inquired by the court was there any quota for the handicapped, the counsel for NED, M Bilal, informed the court that the VC had requested the government to allocate quota for disabled persons but the matter was still pending.
The court was informed that the University had already offered Osama to get admission in textile designing or architecture.
Ameer Muslim Hani, appearing on behalf of petitioner, submitted that Osama was being denied admission just for colour blindness which should not be a criteria to bar a person from getting education of his or her choice.
