Diamondbacks embarrass Yankees

PHOENIX (Arizona), Oct 28: The Arizona Diamondbacks embarrassed the three-time defending champion New York Yankees with a 9-1 rout in Game One of the 97th World Series on Saturday.

Luis Gonzalez and Craig Counsell each homered as Arizona, a fourth-year franchise in its first World Series, banged out 10 hits, putting together four-run third and fourth innings helped along by two Yankee errors and two intentional walks.

Starter Curt Schilling yielded just one run on three hits over seven innings and relievers Mike Morgan and Greg Swindell each added a hitless, scoreless inning.

Schilling struck out eight, walked just one and hit a batter.

Gonzalez, Reggie Sanders and Damian Miller had two hits apiece while Gonzalez, Sanders and Steve Finley scored twice. Gonzalez and Mark Grace drove in two runs apiece.

New York starter Mike Mussina lasted only three innings, giving up five runs — three earned — on six hits, one intentional walk and a hit batsman. He struck out four.

Reliever Randy Choate yielded four runs, only one earned, on three hits in one inning.

David Justice and Scott Brosius committed errors for New York, and five of the Arizona runs were unearned.

The two intentional walks were immediately followed by run-scoring hits for Arizona and his major lineup switch, Justice for Paul O’Neill in right field, blew up in his face.

Torre had decided to go with Justice, most often a designated hitter but also normally a dependable outfielder, because he had a better batting history against Schilling than O’Neill.

But Justice struck out all three times he batted and committed a costly error on a fly ball in the third inning.

The Yankees, seeking their 28th World Series championship, scored in the top of the first when Derek Jeter was hit on the hand by the fourth pitch Schilling threw and Bernie Williams doubled him in.

OTTAWA: Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson had a hat trick and an assist while Jani Hurme took a shutout deep into the third period as the Senators beat the St Louis Blues 4-1 on Saturday.
