Jail official ‘deprives’ foreigners of $750

By A Correspondent

MULTAN, Oct 26: A foreigner lodged in the women’s jail here has alleged that an official has defrauded her and four other foreigners and deprived them of $750.

In a letter to the jail superintendent, Fatima Yusaf alleged that jail official Zamurad Khan came to her cell on Oct 3 last and told her that the authorities had received her transfer papers for Adiala jail, Rawalpindi. The official demanded money to speed up the procedural formalities claiming that her brother was in home department.

She alleged that the official took $100 from her, $100 from Fausat Hussan, $200 from Alima Bello, $250 from Funke Royemi and $100 from Lolki. But the ‘promise’ had not so far been fulfilled.

At the end of her letter Yusaf wrote that she had witnesses to substantiate her allegation.

When contacted, jail authorities confirmed that a probe into the matter had been initiated.

Most of the foreigners want to be lodged at the Rawalpindi jail to constantly and easily remain in touch with the embassies of their respective countries situated in Islamabad. Moreover, the hot weather of Multan also does not suit them, especially the European nationals. This weakness makes them vulnerable to the exploits of jail staff.

However, the matter has also to be looked into that how did the inmates succeed in holding cash, that too, in US dollars as retaining cash by the prisoners is normally prohibited. This aspect can only decide the veracity of the allegation.

Swindler caught: The local Bahauddin Zakariya University authorities on Friday apprehended a person who was found issuing fake appointment letters to the people.

It is learnt Rao Naeem Akhtar of Tariqabad near Civil Lines allegedly hoodwinked a number of youth on pretext of providing jobs to them in the institution.

During a short span, he handed over fake letters to Saeed Ahmad of Basti Hamid Nagar against Rs8,500, Abdul Hameed of Basti Khair Shah against Rs 8,000, Muhammad Saleem of Sports Ground against Rs8,000, Muhammad Younis of Sports Ground against Rs3,000 and Muhammad Javed of Tibba Sultanpur against Rs5,000.

On Friday, one of the victims, Abdul Hameed, accompanied by the accused visited the institution. The principal informed the administration over suspicion.

Led by resident officer in the university, security officers and Allapa police came there and arrested him.

When contacted, university post police official on duty apprehended the swindler could be one of the culprits among the staff members.
