KARACHI: Hameeduddin Shahid dies

KARACHI, Oct 22: Khwaja Hameeduddin Shahid, the founding editor of monthly Subras and president of the Bahaduryar Jung Academy, died of a heart attack here on Monday evening. He was 86.

He left behind three sons, Dost Mohiuddin, Basalat Aliuddin and Dr Khurram Fiazuddin. His wife, Dr Firasat, had died in 1990.

Mr Shahid, who was also the secretary of the Aiwan-i-Urdu, was born in Hyderabad Deccan in 1915. He took a Master’s degree in Urdu literature from Usmania University, and worked there as a teacher till 1960. He was also associated with the Idara Adbiyat-i-Urdu, which was established by Urdu scholar Dr Mohiuddin Qadri.

In 1960, he migrated to Pakistan, and joined the Urdu Lughat Board. Here, he worked as a reader till 1976, focussing on words of Deccani origin. He was an expert on Deccani adab.

After his retirement from the board, he revived the publication of monthly Subras that he had brought out in Hyderabad Deccan till 1960.

He wrote a large number of books, such as Urdu main scienci adab, Shura-i-Hyderabad, Risala-i-Mahmood khushbayan, Hakimul shura Amjad Hyderabadi and Shamsul ulema kay scienci karnamey.

His Namaz-i-Janaza will be held at the Medina Masjid in Block B of North Nazimabad on Tuesday after Zuhar prayers. He will be buried in the Paposh graveyard. His Soyem will be held at D-143, Block B, North Nazimabad, on Wednesday.
