ISLAMABAD, Oct 22: The government is likely to accept as a special case all late income tax returns filed till October 31 for self assessment scheme, official sources said here on Monday.

Under the self assessment scheme 2001-02, only those returns qualified for self-assessment, which were filed by Sept 30, the last date for income tax returns.

The CBR spokesman and member Direct Taxes, Vakil Ahmed Khan when contacted said that the decision to this effect would be taken on the basis of total returns after due date by the end of the current month.

“We have been receiving persistent demands from the taxpayers that as the CBR given them concession in penalty on filing late returns, therefore, their late returns should also qualify for self-assessment,” he said.

The CBR has already announced token penalty of Rs50 to 100 on each filer instead of real penalty.
