Jayasinghe blocks movie

COLOMBO, Oct 20: Sri Lanka’s only female Olympic medallist, Susanthika Jayasinghe, has obtained a court order preventing the making of a film on her rags-to-riches story, officials said Saturday.

Jayasinghe, 25, obtained an order from the Colombo district court Friday preventing the shooting of a film “Suseema” based on the life story of Sri Lanka’s best known athlete.

“The actress they have chosen to depict my life story cannot run like me,” Jayasinghe said, adding the film could distort her life story and devalue her achievements.

The Colombo district court ordered that the case on the film be taken up in November.

Jayasinghe won bronze at last year’s Sydney Olympics in the 200-metre event and became the only Sri Lankan woman to win an Olympic medal.—AFP
