KARACHI, Oct 15: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has stressed the need for formulating programmes for technical education and training in an organized and coordinated manner and in keeping with market requirements.

He was presiding over a meeting here in the Governor’s House on Monday. Besides others, the meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Javed Ashraf Husain, Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan, Principal Secretary Brig Akhtar Zamin, Secretary Transport Mohammed Abbas, Secretary Education Nazar Husain Maher, DCO Karachi Shafiqur Rahman Paracha and DIG Traffic Mohammed Yamin Khan.

The meeting reviewed the law and order situation in the province, state of education, health, transport, etc, and decided to revitalize the adopt-a-school scheme.

The governor called for incorporating modern technologies in the syllabus besides establishing contacts with industrial units.

Iqbal Durrani, who looks after the Technical Education Project, Sindh, briefed the meeting on the project.

In order to provide industrial, technical, vocational education under a coordinated programme it was decided to set up a committee to be headed by Sohail Wajahat, an expert from the private sector.

Members of the committee will include the provincial secretaries of education, labour and social welfare, representatives of the Board of Technical Education and polytechnic institutes and private sector experts.

The institutes of technical education are, at present, working under various departments, and the committee will give recommendations to make their working more systematic and effective.

The meeting was informed that the Technical Education Project would cost Rs712.407 million. Of this, Rs545.724m would be provided by the Asian Development Bank and Rs166.683m by the Sindh government.

The project is aimed at consolidating and rehabilitating technical education for which the ADB is extending cooperation.

This would help enhance the quality of technical education and ensure better employment opportunities. The programme will also help in promoting teaching techniques and competence, managerial skills, financial sustainability besides linkage with the private sector.

LAW & ORDER: Mr Soomro said the development of Karachi and improvement of law and order in the port city are necessary for the economic development, stability and prosperity of the country.

The effective role of the community and members of the city government, at every level, would be vital to accomplish this objective.

The governor said those giving strike calls should prevent their supporters from indulging in violence which might pose serious threat to life and property of the people and disturb normal activities of life.

TELE-TAXIS: The Sindh government has decided to expand the tele-taxi system to other cities of the province after its introduction in Karachi.

The Sindh governor called for an expansion of the tele-taxi network in Karachi.

It was decided to invite tenders for the introduction of tele-taxis in Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana.

Talking to a group of under-training section officers of Punjab, Governor Soomro said all provinces were functioning with the full spirit of unity.

The governor apprised the group of the steps being taken with regard to agriculture, industry and investment. He said besides protecting the rights of consumers, incentives had also been provided to businessmen and industrialists.

In this regard he referred to the elimination of years-old system of inspection of industrial and commercial establishments.

Referring to the issue of unemployment, he said to overcome this problem the government was promoting the establishment of investment-friendly environment and self-employment schemes through the Khushhali Bank.—PPI/APP
