Malakand levy man killed in clash

By Our Correspondent

MARDAN, Oct 12: A member of the Malakand Levy was killed and 15 people were injured in a clash between members of law-enforcement agencies and enraged supporters of religio-political parties who set ablaze a customs checkpoint and a Levy Station at Sakha Kot in the Malakand Agency, some 20 kilometres from here on Friday.

The disturbance began when the personnel of the law-enforcement agencies tried to stop participants of a protest procession, jointly taken out by workers and supporters of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) and Shariat Islami (SI) against US attack on Afghanistan, from marching on the main Mardan-Malakand Agency road.

The mob looted belongings of the customs staff from the checkpoint before setting it ablaze. Two rifles of the law-enforcement agencies also went missing from the torched Levy Station.

Two more protest meetings were held in the Rustam and Garhi Kapoora villages of Mardan district.

Both the meetings ended peacefully.
