PESHAWAR: Ex-minister backs president’s stand

PESHAWAR, Oct 8: Veteran leaguer and former State Minister Muhammad Unis Elahi has supported President General Pervez Musharraf’s statement at his press conference on the situation that emerged following US attacks on Afghanistan.

Talking to APP here on Monday, he said the government tried its level best to convince the Taliban leadership about an amicable settlement of their stand-off with the United States following Sept 11 bombing of the World Trade Centre and Pentagon.

However, the Taliban leaders turned down every request made by the Pakistan government to save the region from the catastrophe. He said, President Musharraf spoke well at the press conference and candidly expressed his viewpoint over the issue.

Muhammad Unis Elahi said, Pakistan made its best efforts for moderation in the policy of the Taliban regime and for extradition of Osama Bin Laden. The present attacks were not against the people of Afghanistan but against those harbouring terrorists.

“The president rightly pointed out to the world community that they must initiate efforts for rehabilitation of the people of Afghanistan after the sharp and targeted action.”

Moreover, the president categorically told the US president and the British prime minister that the Northern Alliance must not draw mileage out of this action, he added.

Pakistan would like to have friendly Afghanistan in the post-action scenario, he added. —APP
