LARKANA, Oct 7: Non-availability of anti-rabies Vaccines (ARVs) in Chandka Medical College Teaching Hospital (CMCH), Larkana, has left the dog bite cases visiting the hospital to suffer.
The hospital sources confirmed on Sunday that it (CMCH) was running short of ARVs for the last five days and added despite repeated telegrams to the management of National Institute of Health (NIH) the required number of injections has not been received. It has been assessed that average number of dog bite cases referred to CMCH varies around 35 to 40 per month. But the hospital management has developed a practice to regularly keep the patients on ARV for which it could have stock in store to meet the demand.
Last month, only 17 cases of dog bite could be completed out of 35 reported to the hospital while eight persons did not turn up to complete the doze of 14 pricks, the sources said adding that still 10 cases are under the treatment at CMCH. Very frequently the NIH provides small number of vials against the indent one made by the CMCH. However, the emergency needs are being met by the District Health Office, which gets ARV from the Director General of Health Sindh.
The non-availability of ARV injections with CMCH paired with the failure of Larkana Municipal Corporation’s launching anti pye-dog campaign had virtually sandwiched the victims.
People attached with the medical profession suggested that CMCH should be made responsible to look after the dog bite cases occur in LMC’s boundaries while the EDO Health should attend the rest of the talukas.
Also the management of NIH should be approached conveying it the intensity of the cases, they added.
