MULTAN, Oct 5: The Rawalpindi zone team won the Army Tennis Championship trophy 2001 defeating Bahawalpur zone 3-1 at the Multan Garrison mess green courts here Friday.
Bahawalpur team bagged the second position while the Mangla zone was placed third.
GOC Multan, Maj Gen Najeeb-uz-Zaman who was chief guest on the occasion witnessed the finals and gave away prizes to the winners.
According to ISPR sources, the most interesting match of the day was the doubles event between Lt Col Masood Aslam and Capt Zia of Rawalpindi and the two brothers, Maj Adnan Majid and Lt Umar Majid of Bahawalpur zone.
Both sides were equally matched and the score in the match progressed neck and neck. The Rawalpindi pair won the first game by 6-4 but lost the second game 6-7, after an interesting and well-contested competition.
In the third game, however, the ball was again back in their court and the senior and seasoned players gave a crushing defeat of 6-2 to the young boys.
In the first singles final, the national-fame player Capt Zia of Rawalpindi trounced Bahawalpur zone’s Maj Amir Sultan 6-4 and 6-1. The second match turned out to be the an easy walkover for Bahawalpur’s Maj Adnan who outclassed Rawalpindi’s Maj Hashmat 6-0 and 6-2. Earlier, the Mangla zone beat Karachi zone by 3-0.—APP
