ISLAMABAD: Special security steps taken for Blair’s visit

ISLAMABAD, Oct 5: Islamabad police has taken special security measures to maintain law and order and to avoid any terrorist activity in the Capital on the arrival of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Processions in Islamabad on Friday in view of Mr Blair’s visit. As such the Afghan Defence Council (PADC), and Jihadi outfits held a demonstration at Raja Bazaar, Rawalpindi.
Troops are also coordinating with the police to maintain law and order during the Mr Blairs visit. Army personnel had started patrolling different areas of Islamabad from Thursday night.
The route of Mr Blair’s convoy from Islamabad airport to unknown destination in capital was kept secret by the law enforcement agencies.
Security had also been beefed up in the vicinity of the airport. Authorities had also banned entry of people and their relatives in the airport premises.
Police commandos have been deployed at the rooftops of all buildings near the airport and chief executive secretariat.
He said police commandos equipped with sophisticated weapons and wireless sets have been deployed at all sensitive places. Police personnel in plainclothes with sniffer dogs had also been deployed to avert criminal and terrorist activities, in commercial areas.
The official said security had been tightened in the vicinity of mosques, Imambargahs, airport, exit points and entrance, bus stands and other public places. Law enforcement agencies’ personnel in plainclothes had been deployed in different commercial areas to keep vigilance on the activities of suspicious persons.
